Osteoporosis is a bone disease that develops when bone mineral density and bone mass decreases, or when the structure and strength of bone changes. This can lead to reduced mineralization of the bone and finally loss of bone stability and increased risk of fractures.

BONE HEALTH

Approximately 34% of all women - predominantly post-menopausal - suffer from osteoporosis. Lack of exercise, malnutrition (especially reduced calcium and vitamin D supply), hormone disorders or the intake of medications can have a negative effect on the mineral balance of the bones.

It is therefore vital that women in particular monitor their bone health and adopt nutrition and lifestyle habits to prevent the onset of osteoporosis and reduce their risk of fractures.

MENOPAUSE AND BONE HEALTH

Menopause is the most common cause of osteoporosis. As hormones change to accommodate normal menopausal changes, estrogen levels start to fluctuate and then drop. Since estrogen helps prevent bones from getting weaker by slowing the natural breakdown of bone, its reduction during menopause significantly speeds up bone loss.

NUTRITION AND BONE HEALTH

Many nutrients play a role in bone health, such as calcium, vitamin D, protein, magnesium, phosphorous, vitamin K2 and potassium. If you eat a healthy diet (with lots of fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds, and lean proteins), you'll get enough of most nutrients needed to keep your bones healthy and functioning well. But many people struggle to meet their daily needs without focusing in on the key nutrients.
